The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has released current quarterly data of provisional mortality rates for several top causes of death in the United States. The data show cancer and heart disease trended downward in the last quarter of 2018.

The data provide the first estimated, or provisional, mortality rates for 2018 for disease-related top causes of death. This quarter's release do not contain full-year 2018 provisional death rates for external causes of death, including drug overdoses, homicide, firearm mortality, and suicide.

In addition, the report includes only death rates — the number of deaths per 100,000 population — not whole death numbers.

"Estimates for the 12-month period ending with a specific quarter include all seasons of the year and, thus, are insensitive to seasonality," the authors write.

The crude mortality rate for all causes was 859.7 in the fourth quarter of 2018 (2018 Q4). This is lower than the crude death rate of 875.2 for the fourth quarter of 2017.
