acute pulmonary edema treatment :: Article Creator In Non-COVID-19 Acute Respiratory Failure, HFNO May Cost Less Than NIV High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) may be cost-neutral or cost-saving compared with noninvasive ventilation (NIV) among patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF), but not for patients critically ill with COVID-19, according to study findings published in Respiratory Medicine. The economic analysis study used outcomes and cost data from the RENOVATE clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.Gov Identifier: NCT03643939), conducted at 33 sites in Brazil, to compare the cost of using HFNO vs NIV in ARF.  The analysis evaluated the incremental cost associated with HFNO vs NIV for treating 4 subgroups of ARF patients: (1) those who were nonimmunocompromised with hypoxemia; (2) those with COPD exacerbations with respiratory acidosis; (3) those with acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema; and (4) those with hypoxemic COVID-19. Notably, clinical outco...

contagious bacteria in stool :: Article Creator C. Diff Infection: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis And Treatment Clostridioides difficile (C. Diff) is a type of bacteria that can cause colitis, a serious inflammation of the colon. Infections from C. Diff often start after you've been taking antibiotics. It can sometimes be life-threatening. When you have C. Diff, the symptoms can range from mild to severe. Mild symptoms can include problems such as: Watery diarrhea that happens three to four times a day for several days Stomach pain, cramping, or tenderness In more serious infections, there may be blood or pus in the stool. This can happen because C. Diff can cause the colon (also called the large intestine) to get inflamed. When this happens, tissue in the colon can bleed or make pus. Other symptoms of a serious infection include: If your C. Diff infection is severe, you could get severe intestinal inflammation. Your colon could als...

spinal tb causes :: Article Creator Spinal Tuberculosis With Concomitant Spondylolisthesis: Coexisting ... Study design: Report of three unusual cases of coexisting spondylolisthesis and tuberculosis in the same patient. Objectives: To document the rare occurrence and attempt to postulate the probable reasons for such an association. Setting: Tertiary care teaching hospital in a developing country. Methods: This communication reports the outcome of three cases where there was spondylolisthesis and spinal tuberculosis in the same patient. The probable reason for such an occurrence is discussed along with a literature review relevant to this topic. Results: The cases responded favorably to conservative treatment with multidrug antitubercular chemotherapy and spinal braces. Conclusions: Association of spondylolisthesis and spinal tuberculosis is extremely rare. If the tubercular process is fulminant, spondylolisthesis secondary to destr...

tuberculosis chest x ray :: Article Creator AI Software May Successfully Diagnose Tuberculosis - UPI.com Artificial intelligence (AI) may help clinicians diagnose tuberculosis in parts of the world where radiologists are scarce, a new study suggests. AI software successfully identified tuberculosis (TB) from cellphone photos of chest X-ray images, researchers reported at a European conference this week. "We've shown that AI software is at least as good at detecting TB as a trained radiologist and that a simple mobile phone photograph is sufficient for analysis," said study leader Dr. Frauke Rudolf, of the infectious diseases department at Aarhus University Hospital, in Denmark. Chest X-rays play an important role in detecting TB in patients unable to produce good quality sputum (phlegm) samples for microbiological analysis. Using software to help diagnose conditions based on...

lung infection shortness of breath :: Article Creator Doctor's Tip: Shortness Of Breath Is A Common Complaint A frequent complaint that brings patients to primary care doctors is shortness of breath. Often the cause is weight gain or poor aerobic conditioning. This column is about more serious causes. Lung infections: Pneumonia usually occurs as a complication of a viral upper respiratory infection such as influenza. Classic symptoms in addition to shortness of breath are moderate to severe cough, fever, chills and sometimes chest pain with a deep breath. Symptoms may be less severe in "walking pneumonia," but pneumonia can be serious, and people still die from it. Viral pneumonia does not respond to antibiotics, but bacterial pneumonia does. If you have any symptoms of pneumonia, the sooner you get diagnosed and receive appropriate treatment, the better. One of the hallmarks of severe COVID-19 disease is low oxygen, which causes...
