Hospitals 'extremely Busy' As 1,017 People Admitted With Flu Virus This Morning & HSE Confirm System 'under Pressure'

THE HSE has said the number of people in hospital with the flu has been "increasing rapidly", with 1,017 patients admitted with the virus this morning.

Hospitals are currently "extremely busy" and the system is "under pressure" as services attempt to cope with the influx of people admitted for various cases and emergencies, including those suffering from the flu.

The number of people in hospital with flu hit 1,017 this morning, compared to 984 yesterday, 869 the previous day and 562 this day last week.

And the HSE admitted that GP out-of-hours services, GP surgeries, ambulance services, hospital emergency departments, and inpatient services are all feeling the effects of respiratory illnesses, primarily influenza.

A spokesperson for the HSE said: "Our hospitals are currently extremely busy.

"Yesterday, emergency departments saw a total of 5,150 patients, with 1,200 of those admitted for various cases and emergencies, including individuals suffering from winter respiratory viruses, mainly flu."

The flu, which is also known as influenza, is a severe infection caused by a virus that infects your lungs and upper airways.

It will often get better on its own, but it can make some people seriously ill.

HSE CEO Bernard Gloster said that staff and systems are responding and managing "very well" to the situation.

But Gloster admitted that, even though "we have improved" on recent years, there is "no doubt that the system is under pressure".

He continued: "Our hospitals are operating infection prevention control measures and we ask everyone to help and co-operate, including with any visitor restrictions that may be in place.

HSE in urgent 'don't regret it later' alert as they warn cough lasting three weeks could by cancer symptom

"We know that can be difficult for families and loved ones, especially at this time of year, but we must protect our patients and prevent the spread of infections in hospitals and other healthcare settings."

Self-care and taking appropriate advice from Pharmacies, GPs and Community Services are all the first steps to taking care this winter.

There are additional local supports available and people have been advised that there is advice available on the HSE website.

Similar to last year, a "significant number" of GP practices around the country are offering additional hours outside their normal surgery hours in the morning, evening and at weekends.

The number of people using the GP out-of-hours service has increased by over 45 per cent in some areas, compared to the same period last year.

The HSE has urged any persons who are feeling unwell to contact their GP.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FLU?

THE flu virus infects your lungs and upper airways and is more severe than a cold.

According to the HSE, symptoms come on very quickly and can include:

  • A sudden high temperature of 38C or above
  • Aches and pains
  • Feeling tired or exhausted
  • A dry cough
  • A sore throat
  • A headache
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea or tummy pain
  • Feeling sick and being sick
  • The symptoms of flu are similar for children but they can also get a pain in their ear and seem to be less active.

Cold and flu symptoms are similar but a flu appears quickly within a few hours, affects more than just your nose and throat and makes you feel exhausted and too unwell to carry on as normal.

The symptoms of a flu can also be similar with those of Covid-19, but the coronavirus is likely to have symptoms of a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.

There are some things you can do to help ease symptoms and get better more quickly.

The HSE advise getting rest and sleep, keeping warm, taking paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and treat aches and pains and drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Flu is "very infectious" and "easily spread" to other people, but you're most likely to give it to others in the first five days.

The flu virus spreads through coughs and sneezes and it can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours.

The HSE is asking people to take care when socialising this New Year's Eve and to restrict their contacts if they have symptoms of the virus.

Bernard Gloster said: "This is a joyous time for many but we encourage people to take care.

"Road safety, food safety, fire safety, mental wellbeing are all issues people need to consider and when these are not attended to the consequences can be significant.

"Additionally this year we would ask if you are in any way flu symptomatic please protect yourself and others by restricting your contacts and please do not visit people in hospital or care settings."
