Greenfield Board of Health chair resigns, effective July 31 - The Recorder

GREENFIELD — After two years in the role, Chair Nancee Bershof has resigned from the Board of Health, effective July 31.

"It has been a challenging two years, but I am glad that I've had the opportunity to serve the city of Greenfield and its citizens," Bershof told board members at a recent meeting. "I'm grateful to the mayor to have selected me for this position, and of course to my fellow board members, Alyssa Valbona and Samantha McIver, whose opinions I valued and whose support helped me manage my role better."

Valbona received a unanimous vote of support to step into the role of chair beginning Aug. 1.

"It has been quite a time to be on a Board of Health," Valbona told board members at last week's meeting. "I really appreciate being able to work with you before stepping into this role and all that you've done for the city."

Bershof was appointed to the Board of Health in 2020.

"I asked you to join the Board of Health at a very challenging time because I knew you could handle it well, and you have," Mayor Roxann Wedegartner told Bershof. "We've never had a Health Department in this city that ran and is run as well as this one."

As a retired physician, Bershof said on Tuesday that when she joined the board in 2020, her interest in serving was largely related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It was a difficult two years for me," she said. "I knew the pandemic would be hard, but some of the other issues that came up for the Board of Health, and with me being in a leadership position, I felt a lot of pressure. … It became difficult for me to maintain my equanimity and balance."

Despite the challenges she found there to be in holding a public position, Bershof felt she was able to provide the board with stability and organization while handling a variety of serious issues.

"Most particularly, I really loved working with the Health Department," she said. "(Health Director Jennifer Hoffman)'s leadership was just beyond … We worked very closely together on all of the issues that the Board of Health dealt with."

Hoffman said Bershof has led the Board of Health with fairness and had to make "some of the toughest decisions" in the years she served.

"You have given direction to the Health Department and assisted us on several projects," Hoffman told Bershof during last week's meeting. "Having you step down is a loss to the Board of Health and the Health Department, and you will be greatly missed."

Bershof thanked Hoffman, as well as Public Health Nurse Megan Tudryn and health inspectors Nicole Glabach and Ruben Arroyo.

"I'm not going anywhere," Bershof said. "If any of you want to contact me and bounce things off of me, I'm available."
