Brucellosis Infection: From symptoms to vaccination and isolation required, here's all you need to know about disease that's spreading in West Bengal - APN Live

Brucellosis Infection

While one is struggling to get over the Covid-19 pandemic, another infectious disease has emerged in the country. It seems like the diseases don't seem to end anytime soon. When one is making major steps to prevent the spread of Omicron and other Covid-19 variant cases, a new disease is being surfaced in West Bengal. The disease is called brucellosis infection.

This disease has infected the state's Animal Resources Development Department staff. According to sources, many people have been admitted to the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine as a result of this disease.

What is Brucellosis Infection?

Brucellosis is a bacterial infection caused by various Brucella species that mostly infect cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, and dogs. Humans often get the disease through direct contact with infected animals, through the consumption of contaminated animal products, or through breathing airborne pollutants.

According to the Animal Resources Development Department's employee organisation, 250 people have already been admitted to various districts.

Symptoms of Brucellosis Infection

The majority of cases are caused by consuming unpasteurized milk or cheese from infected goats or sheep. Brucellosis often causes flu-like symptoms such as:
Fever,
Weakness,
Fatigue,
Weight loss.

The infection, however, can occur in a variety of ways. Because many patients' symptoms are mild, the condition may be neglected. The disease's incubation period can range from one week to two months but is typically two to four weeks.

Is there any vaccination for Brucellosis Infection?

From September 20 to September 25, cattle were vaccinated against Brucella. At the time, a number of volunteers became infected with Brucellosis after injecting or spilling the vaccine into their bodies. Furthermore, it is suspected that the disease has spread from infected cattle.

The symptoms of brucellosis are similar to those of many other diseases, including Covid-19.

As a result, identifying this condition is tough. According to experts, without timely intervention, the risk of mortality cannot be ruled out. According to officials at the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, the issue is being addressed urgently. A sufficient quantity of testing kits have been arranged.

What does the person who is infected with Brucellosis Infection have to say about the disease?

The brucella virus was identified in a woman's body in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. She is being treated at the hospital. The affected worker's name, according to medical authorities, is Ila Mondal. She lives in the Shikharbali 2 neighborhood in South Durgapur.

At the hospital, she said that she went to vaccinate the cows on November 24. She was wearing gloves but while giving medicine with a new syringe, a needle got stuck in the finger of the left hand. continuing she said that the blood came out and it was very painful. After testing in the first week of December, brucellosis was detected. But her condition is stable now.

As many as 45 people at the School of Tropical Medicine have been tested positive for brucellosis in the last month and a half. And this number is not less. According to experts, the number of casualties might rise even more. With that in mind, directives have been issued to construct the infrastructure.

Can Brucellosis Infection spread from person to person?

The spread of brucellosis from person to person is quite rare. Infected moms who breastfeed their babies may transmit the infection to their children.
