What's going on?Disney announced at its Investor Day presentation that Leslye Headland will lead a new "Star Wars" series called "The Acolyte," which will be "a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era." The Rise of Darth Plagueis Could Be Coming to Disney+ - Inside the Magic Posted: 23 Dec 2020 12:00 AM PST If you're a fan of Star Wars history, you probably already know that Darth Sidious (AKA Emperor Sheev Palpatine) learned the ways of the Sith from Darth Plagueis — before murdering him.
Darth Plagueis has primarily appeared in Star Wars Legends non-canon materials, but he was mentioned by Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) during a conversation with Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) in the Skywalker Saga prequel trilogy's final film, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005). As he attempted to sway Skywalker — who eventually, of course, becomes Darth Vader — to the dark side, Palpatine said,
Now, with the recent Walt Disney Company Investor Day announcement that Lucasfilm is developing approximately 11 new Star Wars series for the Disney+ streaming service, some fans have begun to wonder if we could see the rise of Darth Plagueis onscreen for the first time — and even, perhaps, understand if his ability to create life could play into the experiments of Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi) in The Mandalorian and even, perhaps, the existence of Supreme Leader Snoke in the sequel trilogy. Leslye Headland's (Russian Doll) new female-centric Star Wars series, The Acolyte, was one of the shows confirmed at Investor Day. The official Star Wars Twitter account shared the following post, which reads:
During the High Republic age — the pinnacle of Jedi Order culture in the galaxy — Plagueis, who is presumed to have been born between 147 and 120 BBY, would be in his 20s. Since we know The Acolyte is set to explore "emerging dark-side powers," it seems extremely likely that Darth Plagueis — who would have been in the prime of his life during this era — will make an appearance. It also ties to rumors that we could eventually see Tom Hiddleston portray a young Sheev Palpatine in the Star Wars universe. Fans on Twitter are excited about the possibility of Darth Plagueis finally being the focus of a Star Wars series. Rodian Ryan wrote:
Another social media user, Patrick the Hutt posted:
These are intriguing theories. Of course, we will have to wait until The Acolyte debuts on Disney+ to find out for sure what the storyline is, but it certainly seems likely that Darth Plagueis will make an appearance — all of which could be setting-up an eventual look at the relationship between a young Palpatine and his master in another show or mini-series. For any Star Wars fan unfamiliar with the Sith Lord character Darth Plagueis, Wookieepedia offers these details about his rise to power during a largely unexplored era of the Star Wars timeline:
