‘Star Wars’ rumor: ‘The Acolyte’ show may show rise of Darth Plagueis - Deseret News

Disney announced a new "Star Wars" series called "The Acolyte" earlier in December. And new theories suggest the show will tell us something Darth Plagueis and the Sith Order.

What's going on?

Disney announced at its Investor Day presentation that Leslye Headland will lead a new "Star Wars" series called "The Acolyte," which will be "a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era."

Speculation

People are now speculating that the show will tell the story of Darth Plageuis and the rise of Darth Sidious, connecting directly into the prequel trilogy.

Does the timeline work?

  • The High Republic era starts about 200 years before the prequel trilogy.
  • The end of the High Republic would suggest the show takes place close to 50 years before the prequel trilogy.
  • Darth Plageuis was likely born between 147 and 120 BBY, which would make him 20 years old during the High Republic era, Den of Geek reports.
  • Darth Plageuis would likely be in his prime during the time of "The Acolyte." And that means we might see his rise and eventual fall.

One more note ...

As I wrote for the Deseret News, the showrunner Headland said "The Acolyte" will be set in a "timeline that we don't know much about."

  • "It's in a pocket of the universe and a pocket of the timeline that we don't know much about," Headland said, according to IndieWire.
  • "For me, it's less about going through the Star Wars universe cinematically or artistically, I'm actually kind of combing through it geographically and go on a literal journey," Headland said, according to IndieWire.. "When we were pitching, I had my designer create that Indiana Jones-like 'we go here and then we go here,' with the little dotted red line like this is our journey, this is where we're going."

The Rise of Darth Plagueis Could Be Coming to Disney+ - Inside the Magic

If you're a fan of Star Wars history, you probably already know that Darth Sidious (AKA Emperor Sheev Palpatine) learned the ways of the Sith from Darth Plagueis — before murdering him.

Darth Plagueis has primarily appeared in Star Wars Legends non-canon materials, but he was mentioned by Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) during a conversation with Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) in the Skywalker Saga prequel trilogy's final film, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).

As he attempted to sway Skywalker — who eventually, of course, becomes Darth Vader — to the dark side, Palpatine said,

"Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life. He had such a knowledge of the dark side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying."

Now, with the recent Walt Disney Company Investor Day announcement that Lucasfilm is developing approximately 11 new Star Wars series for the Disney+ streaming service, some fans have begun to wonder if we could see the rise of Darth Plagueis onscreen for the first time — and even, perhaps, understand if his ability to create life could play into the experiments of Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi) in The Mandalorian and even, perhaps, the existence of Supreme Leader Snoke in the sequel trilogy.

Leslye Headland's (Russian Doll) new female-centric Star Wars series, The Acolyte, was one of the shows confirmed at Investor Day. The official Star Wars Twitter account shared the following post, which reads:

Leslye Headland brings a new @StarWars series to @DisneyPlus with The Acolyte. "The Acolyte" is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.

During the High Republic age — the pinnacle of Jedi Order culture in the galaxy — Plagueis, who is presumed to have been born between 147 and 120 BBY, would be in his 20s.

Since we know The Acolyte is set to explore "emerging dark-side powers," it seems extremely likely that Darth Plagueis — who would have been in the prime of his life during this era — will make an appearance. It also ties to rumors that we could eventually see Tom Hiddleston portray a young Sheev Palpatine in the Star Wars universe.

Fans on Twitter are excited about the possibility of Darth Plagueis finally being the focus of a Star Wars series.

Rodian Ryan wrote:

I'm most excited for this [referring to The Acolyte]. Sounds like it will be told from the prospective of the Sith. Could we see Darth Plagueis and Darth Tenebrous? How do they stay hidden from the Jedi. If a Jedi does findout about them do they simply kill them or do a force mind wipe or something?

Another social media user, Patrick the Hutt posted:

They said #TheAcolyte takes place near the end of the #HighRepublic Era. Is it a show from the Sith's perspective as they try to rise again? Maybe The Acolyte is the master of Darth Plagueis?

These are intriguing theories. Of course, we will have to wait until The Acolyte debuts on Disney+ to find out for sure what the storyline is, but it certainly seems likely that Darth Plagueis will make an appearance — all of which could be setting-up an eventual look at the relationship between a young Palpatine and his master in another show or mini-series.

For any Star Wars fan unfamiliar with the Sith Lord character Darth Plagueis, Wookieepedia offers these details about his rise to power during a largely unexplored era of the Star Wars timeline:

As master and disciple, Plagueis and Palpatine—who took the Sith moniker Darth Sidious—worked together for years, trying to unlock the secrets of immortality as Plagueis lusted for it and to execute their order's long-percolating plan of supplanting the Galactic Republic with a new Sith Empire. At some point, Plagueis acquired the protocol droid 11-4D.
