Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith's Darth Plagueis scene set up Emperor Palpatine's return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In addition to covering Anakin Skywalker's fall and transformation into Darth Vader, the prequel trilogy also depicted the rise of the Empire. The three movies shed a lot of light on Palpatine's backstory, detailing his political career as he ascended to the position of Supreme Chancellor and took over the galaxy. Audiences were even treated to a brief history lesson exploring Palpatine's time as a Sith apprentice to Darth Plagueis.

In the now-famous sequence, Palpatine manipulates an impressionable Anakin by revealing Plagueis had the power to save people from death. Within the context of Revenge of the Sith, this scene was very important because it influenced Anakin's turn to the dark side (he wanted to prevent Padmé from dying in childbirth). But it also has great significance in regard to the entire saga. Years after Revenge of the Sith debuted, J.J. Abrams used Palpatine and Anakin's conversation as a springboard for the former's return in The Rise of Skywalker.

A notable line in the Revenge of the Sith scene is Palpatine's "The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural." This bit of dialogue is repeated early in The Rise of Skywalker when Kylo Ren finds the Emperor on Exegol. It's the only explanation the movie gives for how Palpatine is still alive after Return of the Jedi, tying the sequels back to the prequels by recalling the Darth Plagueis scene.

Bringing things full circle in The Rise of Skywalker, Abrams was able to provide payoff nearly 15 years in the making. The Plagueis scene established the Sith/dark side technique of cheating death, but since at the time Revenge of the Sith was the last Star Wars movie, the concept was never further explored onscreen. Though The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi ignored it, it isn't surprising Abrams picked up this thread for The Rise of Skywalker. Darth Plagueis is his favorite scene from the prequels, and it was likely easy for Abrams to integrate it into The Rise of Skywalker when it was decided Palpatine should be the main villain. Many viewers were surprised when Palpatine's iconic laugh ended the first Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer, but proof that his survival was possible had been around since 2005.

The specifics of Palpatine's return and how exactly he survived were left for The Rise of Skywalker tie-in publications to explain, but the movie's Revenge of the Sith callback is still appreciated. It was a nice nod to Star Wars history, connecting the present and past in a way that felt organic. With Palpatine coming back in The Rise of Skywalker, it would have been a missed opportunity if the film did not address the Darth Plagueis scene or attempted to come up with another reason for his survival. Some viewers will always have issues with certain story changes made in The Rise of Skywalker and how they relate to the previous installments, but in this instance, Abrams' ideas fit with what had come before.
