tb gold test :: Article Creator Scientists Develop A TB Test & Find A Genetic Vulnerability In Resistant Strains A rapid diagnostic test for tuberculosis (TB) has been approved for the first time by the World Health Organization (WHO). The assay can identify the tuberculosis-causing pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum samples within a few hours. Tuberculosis is a primary cause of death by infectious disease worldwide. The disease is estimated to kill over one million people every year, and is a huge socio-economic burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. "High-quality diagnostic tests are the cornerstone of effective TB care and prevention," said Dr. Rogerio Gaspar, WHO Director for Regulation and Prequalification. "Prequalification paves the way for equitable access to cutting-edge technologies, empowering countries to address the dual burden of TB and drug-resistant TB."  M. Tuberculosis c...

Canongate; 400 pages; £18.99. I N A TALK she gave to the Royal Society of Literature in 2010, Hilary Mantel offered some advice to would-be authors of historical fiction. "Learn to tolerate strange world views," she said: Get our daily newsletter Upgrade your inbox and get our Daily Dispatch and Editor's Picks. Don't pervert the values of the past. Women in former eras were downtrodden and frequently assented to it. Generally speaking, our ancestors were not tolerant, liberal or democratic…Can you live with that? In his sixth novel, "To Calais, In Ordinary Time", James Meek seems to have taken Ms Mantel's interdiction as a challenge. This is a book that seeks to compress the distance between past and present,...

Chikungunya virus linked to joint pain that persists for years after initial infection, finds US study - EdexLive Chikungunya virus linked to joint pain that persists for years after initial infection, finds US study - EdexLive Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:42 AM PDT A new method for permanently marking cells infected with chikungunya virus could reveal how joint pain from the disease persists for months to years after the initial infection, says a study published in the science journal PLOS Pathogens. Chikungunya is an arbovirus - a term used to describe viruses spread by insects - and its genetic component is the single-stranded RNA (ssRNA), as opposed to the double-stranded DNA. The virus is spread by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, and the disease usually starts with sudden fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, joint and muscular pain, and rashes. "There is neither any vaccine nor drugs available to cure the chikung...

That is nearly 1 in every 4 students who missed what amounts to two or more days a month each month of the school year. At the five high schools, the number of chronically absent students topped 2,000, or 1 in every 3 students. And the numbers and percentages of the chronically absent at individual schools can be even more breathtaking. At Hall High, there were 553 chronically absent students, which accounted for 53% of the student body. At J.A. Fair, there were 374 chronically absent studen...

That's just par for the course for Phish fans, who braved some travel headaches, health hazards and housing hullabaloo for the jam band's annual Labor Day weekend shows at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. This month concerns about fleas and prairie dogs infected with the pneumonic plague forced the venue to cancel camping outside the venue, where some 3,000 people planned to set up for the weekend. Parking lots also were closed, diverting show-goers into an overflow lot down the street at Northfield Stapleton Mall. The late-breaking news caused thousands of people to change their plans, but stressing about sleeping is n...
