Lucifer No. 2: Plague, tumors, and undead mothers - Bam! Smack! Pow!
The plot thickens, and thins, in the newest issue of Lucifer.
If you dig Shakespeare references, convoluted story-lines, and Satan, well then, Lucifer is the comic for you. Set in the Sandman Universe, Lucifer is one of four new titles from Vertigo Comics, along with The Dreaming, Books of Magic, and House of Whispers. This one deals exclusively with the Prince of Lies, and the awkward situation he’s gotten himself into.
Written by Dan Watters, drawn by Sebastian and Max Fiumara, and colored by Dave McCaig, this haunting and intriguing comic tells the dual story of Lucifer and Detective John Decker, both trapped by their demons, as it were.

Prisons of the flesh and of the mind torment our heroes in Lucifer
Last issue reintroduced us to Lucifer, who appears to be trapped in some sort of personal Hell, which is unusual, considering who we’re talking about. Concurrently, Detective John Decker’s wife is dying from brain cancer, leaving her supposedly bedridden. That issue concluded with John taking his wife from the hospital and getting in a fatal car crash, ending her pain. Bleak. It also ended with Lucifer digging up a statue of Caliban, his actual son. Weirdly, Caliban appears to run a sober living facility that Decker’s wife’s brother Robert is staying at, with some weird stuff going on behind closed doors. In this issue, we start with Decker asking Robert questions about his ex-wife, and as he leaves, a terrible sound causes Decker to collapse. The sound appears to come from a strange pile of bones in a thrice-locked room. Creepy.

Shakespearean witches, and why does the Lucifer team hate cats?
The two blind witches from the first issue talk about their missing third; a reference to the Weird sisters of Macbeth, just as Caliban is a reference to The Tempest. The younger witch tells her tale, which involves being tortured for being a suspected witch during the Black Plague, Lucifer appearing and asking her to forsake God to escape punishment, the appearance of a sweet kitty, and the jailers being really really mean to said kitty. (Two cats have a hard time in this issue, and my question is, why?) Unable to stand their cruelty any longer, she renounces God, at which point Lucifer climbs out of the cat’s mouth, infects the jailers with the plague (the head jailer being Duke Prospero, another Tempest reference), commands the (now) three witches to watch over the same pile of bones seen in the room at the sober facility, and departs, just as the maiden witch (child, maiden, and crone) succumbs to the plague. Tricky devil.

The terrible troubles of our man Lucifer
Back in whatever dream Lucifer (or possibly only his conscious?) is trapped in, he gets kicked into the hole containing the statue of Caliban, and another statue he cannot identify, and shatters his legs. Decker finds out that he, too, has a brain tumor and gets drunk about it. Two randoms walk up to him and are attempt to run him off from the sober living house, but either they are demons, or the tumor is making him hallucinate.
Decker “dreams” of a weird, fleshy blob that seems to be looking for Lucifer, broken-legged Lucifer is taken from the hole he fell in by his maid, who tells him that the unknown statue is of Lucifer, and in the sober living facility, Caliban and Lucifer, the “real” Lucifer, enter a room where Caliban’s mother is purported to be, even though she is thought to be long dead. It turns out that the bundle of bones the witches were asked to protect was, in fact, Caliban’s mother, Sycorax, who is reanimating.
If all that sounds confusing to you, well, good, because I’m equally confused. Nothing like a good mystery to keep me coming back for more, however. I’m going to be rereading old issues of Lucifer for clues, and possibly some Shakespeare for context. The lovely art and intriguing plotline definitely have me hooked.
