Arming herself for Wednesday’s Democratic primary debate, contender Kamala Harris unveiled her latest health care position paper. Harris has flip-flopped over whether she supports eliminating all private insurance in favor of a single-payer government-run health system. Her new plan tries to have it both ways. Don’t be fooled. Reacting to people’s fears about having private health insurance they like ripped away, Harris is promising a 10-year transition period. Here’s what you need to know. If you get health insurance at work or buy your own plan, will you be able to keep it? No. Harris says insurance companies will be allowed “to offer a plan” in the government-run system but only if they follow the government’s strict rules to skimp on what’s spent on your care. “If they want to play by our rules, they can be in the system. If not, they have to get out,” she says. Harris’ plan keeps the window dressing of private insurance but, in fact, rapidly transitions to Medicare payment rat

“What Happens When the World’s Population Stops Growing? - The Atlantic” plus 1 more What Happens When the World’s Population Stops Growing? - The Atlantic Posted: 31 Jul 2019 09:45 AM PDT For most of the time that humans have existed, our ranks have grown really, really slowly. There were an estimated 4 million people on Earth in 10,000 B.C. , and after the following 10 millennia, the planetwide population had only reached 190 million. Even in 1800, the total number of humans was still under 1 billion. The climb since then—made possible by advances in medicine, sanitation, and food production—has been astounding. By 1900, there were 1.65 billion people; by 2000, there were more than 6 billion. Just two decades later, the global population sits at 7.7 billion. But soon—or at least, soon in the context of human history—the number of people on Earth will stop growing. Based on the latest figures from the United Nations , demographers

It's What Good Parents Do. - The Daily Beast Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:01 PM PDT Mario Lopez got hammered on social media Wednesday for controversial remarks he made about transgender children and sexual assault. Angry parents and outraged LGBTQ advocates are calling for him to lose his cushy job at TV's Extra .  As that storm erupted, Lopez apologized in a statement sent to The Advocate . "The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were. I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful." A growing body of research suggests video gaming is no longer the niche pursuit it's been widely considered for decades, but rather a common pastime involving the majority of Canadians to at least some degree. Law enforcement officials, scholars and industry analysts all agree the stereotypes that have long attended discussion of the "gamer" demographic are reductive and fail to capture the various complexities at play in the growing network of game-oriented communities. The story of the Stanley Cup that no one won - SB Nation

Every year we’ve become accustomed to seeing a champion crowned in the Stanley Cup Final. In 1919 things were far more complicated. The finals between the Montreal Canadiens and Seattle Metropolitans had no winner. The season just ended. It remains the only season in North American sporting history the playoffs took place, but there was no champion. The early days of the Stanley Cup had no specific final series or playoff system. The Cup was first awarded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1893, changing hands sporadically in its initial years through exhibition games or being awarded to the league winner. Rules changed in 1915, where the winner of the National Hockey Association (which would become the NHL in 1917) would challenge the winner of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) to decide who would take home Lord Stanley’s Cup. Fast forward to the 1918-19 season. The NHL season was a back-and-forth affair between the Canadiens and Ottawa Senators, with an ever-present fear that
